MAKERSPACE IN ART

FREE CHOICE FRIDAY

Authentic Information concerning STEAM

Some ideas that I would like to further extend into  the classroom are ideas that were originally used during Free Choice which is a time dedicated to  self-directed, independent learning activities. In the art room there is  a list of ‘Create and Make’ items that students can choose from to work on individually, in pairs, or small groups. But to allow these projects to be offered as part of the curriculum and class instruction would benefit all learners. Some of these activities that lend themselves for STEAM integration and project-based, innovative learning are as follows:

Making Kazoos

Making Catapults

Making Flipbooks

Wooden Stick Slinkys

Painting with Pendulums

Propellers and Parachutes

There are so many more ideas to consider and choose from and students would find these projects engaging and fun!

ESCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND  MATH INTEGRATION

Everything is engineered whether you realize it or not; even our thoughts are engineered. The reason being is that they all require a process.  The engineering design cycle is often called the Creative Process or Design Cycle in the area of the Visual Arts. Applying science, technology, engineering and math is a seamless when integrating aspects and concepts related to art. Many units of inquiry in art include all other areas of STEAM whether all at once or individually with a major focus in one area. Some units include:

Grade One:

Color-mixing Visor Construction
Digital Portraits - Technology Integration
Force and Motion - Old Fashioned Games
Number Patterns - Reverse Weaving
Properties of Sound - Painting to Music
Scientific Illustration - Ear Diagrams
Radial Symmetry - Ceramic Spinning Tops
Proportion and Scale - Full-Length Portraits
Animals - Animal Forms Animation
Commercial Services - Printmaking
Sky Patterns - Ladder to the Moon

Grade Two:
What is matter?  Ceramic pinch pot construction
What is matter? - Minerals and color glazes
